How to Clean Toner Powder Spills in Your Printer?

Have you ever had a toner cartridge that started spilling toner powder all over the inside of the printer and causing a big mess? You do not have to worry. You can clean up the mess easily by yourself at home and it will hardly cost you anything. In this article, you will find a list of simple steps to help you clean the spilled toner powder safely without spending hundreds of dollars on a professional service.

Why do toner cartridges leak?

If a toner cartridge is not installed correctly, if it’s cracked or if it’s quite old and you refill it constantly the wrong way, it’s very likely that the toner powder will eventually leak, causing havoc and damaging the printer’s components. If your printer starts spilling toner powder everywhere inside the printer, here is what you need to do:

Warning:

Do not use a regular vacuum. There are substances in the toner that should not be inhaled. Some printer companies offer specially designed toner powder vacuums that include a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter for cleaning up toner spills but these are usually not necessary.

Make sure that you have the following things at your disposal before you begin:

  • Rubber gloves, nonsurgical facial mask
  • Paper towel
  • Transparent plastic
  • Garbage Bag
  • Compressed air sprayer

What to do when you encounter toner spills:

Step 1: Put on your protective gear (rubber gloves and non-surgical face mask) to avoid inhaling the toner powder or getting some of it on your hands.

Step 2: Turn off the machine, disconnect all cables and unplug the power cord from the power outlet.

Step 3: Open the machine’s front cover panel and then pull the toner cartridge out, with the paper towel held underneath it. If your printer uses a drum unit and the toner cartridges are assembled inside it, remove the drum unit completely out of the machine. Avoid tilting the cartridge unnecessarily as it will only worsen the spill. Set it aside.

Step 4: Lay some transparent plastic underneath the machine to prevent the spilled toner powder from scattering. Use the paper towel to remove large amounts of toner powder from the machine and dispose of it in a garbage bag. Avoid using liquid solutions or even water, because these can damage the printer’s components and make toner powder sticky.

Step 5: Use the compressed air holding it 4 inches away from the machine to remove the remaining powder. Do the same with the toner cartridges. If you have a HEPA vacuum, that will do very nicely.

Step 6: Reinstall everything, reconnect all the cables, and turn on the machine.

The cleaning process is complete, and you are ready to print again. If you ever get toner on your hands, just wash it off with soap and water from the tap. Larger spills are obviously much harder to clean. Therefore, consider hiring a qualified professional service to do the job. They should take care of cleaning the toner spillage and protecting the health of everyone around.
