How to Reset a Canon Printer (PG-240 & CL-241)

What is a Canon remanufactured ink cartridge?

Canon PG-240XL and CL-241XL ink cartridges are color ink cartridges designed by Canon for selected PIXMA printers. Canon uses FINE (Full Photolithographic Inkjet Nozzle Engineering) technology to deliver crisp, smudge-resistant print. Remanufactured Canon PG-240XL and CL-241XL Inkjet cartridges are produced by remanufacturing completely empty used original cartridges. Recycling partners collect the Canon PG-240XL and CL-241XLk ink cartridges and send them to a remanufacturing facility. There, each ink cartridge is disassembled and inspected per incoming items protocols for problems such as broken parts, leaks, and clogged printhead nozzles, etc. The damaged parts are repaired or replaced. Then, the cartridge is injected with a premium ink formula to its full capacity. Once the cartridge is refilled, a quality assurance test is conducted to check its performance, print quality, and page yield. It’s what recyclers do every day in recycling centers.

Printer manufacturers use their best efforts to make remanufactured ink cartridges work less smoothly with printers. They do that to keep gaining substantial amounts of money from ink cartridge sales. So, once you have installed a remanufactured cartridge in your printer, do not panic if you see an error message like Ink Low or if the printer refuses to print. These errors are common with remanufactured cartridges. Just follow the steps below to reset your printer. There are two ways to reset it: the direct reset from the printer or the reset through your computer.

Reset from the printer

  1. When you install your cartridges for the first time, color and black cartridge lights may light up or flash. At this point, if you try to print or copy, the printer will not work.
  2. Hold down the STOP/RESET button for at least 5 seconds.
  3. After releasing the button, you will hear a sound indicating that the machine is resetting. The machine may print a blank page at this time.
  4. As of now, you can copy or print. The lights for the color and black cartridges might stay lit or flashing, but this will not affect your machine’s function. Ignore the lights.

Reset from the computer

  1. After you install the cartridges for the first time, when you try to print from your computer, the following message will pop up “Cartridge Not Recognized.”  This is the same message you get when you install OEM original cartridges.
  2. Click OK. The printer will try to print, and then the following message will appear. “Unable To Print”
  3. At this point, click “Cancel Printing.”
  4. Hold down the STOP/RESET button for at least 5 seconds.
  5. After releasing the button, you will hear a sound indicating that the machine is resetting. The machine may print a blank page at this time.
  6. You can try printing again. The printer should work. The lights for the color and black cartridges might stay lit or flashing, but this will not affect your machine’s function. Ignore the lights.
